Q ‘I’m touring on a budget, is Portugal a smart choice?’
Answered by Simon Weir, RIDE
Portugal is a fair trek from the UK so the fastest, most cost-effective way to get there is on the overnight ferry to Santander (www.brittany-ferries.co.uk). Typically you’re looking at six or 10 days between outward and return sailings, giving plenty of time to explore Portugal and Northern Spain. Portugal is a great-value destination. Your money goes a long way in Spain – but it goes even further in Portugal. Petrol’s a similar price to the UK, but food, drink and hotels are a lot cheaper (although slightly less so at the moment with the value of the pound). It’s easy to put together a rewarding riding holiday. If you want to join a guided tour to Portugal, visit www.alpine-tt.com. But it’s easy enough to navigate your own way round. Allow a 10 day trip at least, including sailing times.
