‘In motorcycling terms, I’m home’

“I’ve always promised myself a shaft drive; I’ve ridden Boxers and Guzzis but they weren’t for me. When the K1200S came out I had a go and liked it, but the fuelling was weird. With the K13 I thought, aha, they’ve fixed it; but it took me until this year to get one. And it’s a lovely tool. It’s long and it’s heavy, but it’s planted and it fits me. And it’s shaft drive. After 56 years of adjusting chains, it’s about time I stopped all that.”

“I’ve had the K1200S for two years and had a Blackbird before that. I generally don’t keep bikes for long but the BMW is different: I love it. The handling is better than the Honda, it feels more responsive and it’s so quick. And the comfort is better too – with ESA electronic adjustment. And I love the looks too. It’s a 2005 bike, with around 20,000 miles on it so it’s just run in, really.”

“I had a K1200S and a K1300S previously; every time I’ve sold it to slow myself down, then gone and bought another one. I’ve had other bikes, but I just can’t live without one. I kept looking at them in the paper, online; I just had to admit the K1300S is my bike. It does anything; I commute on it, tour on it, scare myself witless on it. And it’s just easy to spend time on; it’s effortless. In motorcycling terms, I’m home.”
