Q My Honda FMX650 needs road rubber

Motorcycle News (UK) - - Garage -

I have a Honda FMX650 and I am looking to fit new tyres. Could you recommend a good road-based tyre for my bike that offers good grip with reasonable tyre life. Arthur Brown, email

Answered by Bryn Phillips, Cambrian Tyres The sizes used on the FMX650 are 120/70R17 front and 150/60R17 rear, and because the rear size is only fitted on sportsbikes or supermotos the choice of tyres with a more durable tread life is a little limited. However, the latest generation sports tyre, such as the Continental Sport Attack 3, Metzeler M7RR or Bridgestone S21 have good durability for tyres of this type and this is allied to high levels of performance. But because these are the most up-todate tyres, they are also towards the top end of the price range. But there is another way to balance the performance/mileage/cost issue. Bridgestone’s BT-016 Pro (a predecessor to their S21) is available at a much cheaper price. It has a dualcompound tread ensuring increased grip in corners and, whilst it might not last quite as long as the other tyres mentioned above, the reduced cost must make it a serious consideration.
