In what has become the most legendary Macau performance of all, Grand Prix star Kevin Schwantz was persuaded to ride his factory Suzuki RGV500 in the 1988 race.
The American, who went on to win the 500cc world title in 1993, wheelied his way to a huge winning margin over Peter Rubatto and Robert Dunlop.
“I look back on that and wonder how Suzuki ever thought about letting me do it,” says Schwantz.
“As big a kid as I was, and as much stupid stuff as I did on a proper racetrack… wow, what I could have done there with those walls, and how bad I could have got hurt! It has some tricky uphill blind left-right corners, and certain parts of it are really, really fast. It’s no walk in the park by any stretch.”
Schwantz was so far ahead in ’88 he was pulling feet-off wheelies just for fun
