Viñales and Lorenzo off to fast starts

Motorcycle News (UK) - - News - ANDY CALTON

I had a quiet chuckle to myself last week as Jorge Lorenzo wobbled out on his new Ducati during the Motogp test at Valencia and was about 12 seconds off the pace.

However, the wily Spanish superstar had the last laugh as he got to grips with the powerpacked GP16 and ended up well inside the top 10 fastest times and only a little over a second off the fastest.

Maverick Viñales was also moving to a new team and he, too, impressed. Actually he did a whole lot more than impress. He scared the pants off the Motogp paddock and his Yamaha team-mate, Valentino Rossi, in particular.

The Suzuki he’s ridden to such good effect over the last two years is a good bike, the Yamaha is a great one and in the hands of Viñales it looks like Marc Marquez will have another title contender to deal with when the season kicks off next March.

While it’s far too early to really see how well Sam Lowes or Bradley Smith will fare, Cal Crutchlow and Scott Redding keep British hopes sky high. Motogp 2017 is already looking like being one hell of a season!
