A champion ride
Miles: 70 O Scenery: O Roads:
Leicester may be proud of its football and rugby teams, but we’re more impressed with its motorcycling – though rather than the city centre, we’re thinking of the roads around it. The countryside of the East Midlands is packed with quaint villages and cracking roads, making it a perfect place for a ride at any time of year.
Our route heads down the A5199 to Husbands Bosworth, turning left to Market Harborough on the A4304. Crossing the town, joins the A427 towards Corby – but only for a few hundred metres, turning off to take the sublime B664 to Uppingham. It’s a road that has everything, from humpback bridges to hairpins.
Turn left at the lights in Uppingham – unless you want a cuppa at the Harley garage. The route carries on along the 6003 to Oakham, joining the swooping A606 to Melton Mowbray. From Melton we take one of the East Midland’s greatest roads – the B6047 towards Market Harborough. Killjoys have put a 50mph limit on it south of the A47, but we turn off at Three Gates on the back road to Kibworth Harcourt and from there join the A6 to return to Leicester. If they gave out silverware for bike routes, this one’s a champion.
Why waste your money going to theme parks when you can ride roads like this?
