More amazing routes to ride, including a proper Spanish sizzler
There are few corners of Britain as beautiful as the Hartland Peninsula. In summer the sparkling seas are inviting, in winter they’re dramatic. This full day’s ride heads from the holiday hotspot of Minehead to Hartland Quay through the wild beauty of Exmoor for a memorable ride, whatever the time of year.
The route starts simply enough: take the A39 west from Minehead. It’s a long road, climbing up Porlock Hill and flowing across Exmoor. True, the stretch after Barnstaple is a bit pedestrian but after a few miles, in Higher Clovelly, the route turns off on the B3248 to Hartland. Stay on the road all the way to the Quay and get a bite to eat in The Wreckers.
Returning to Hartland village, take the southern arm of the B3248 and then the A39 towards Bude. In Kilkhampton pick up the B3254 and then the A3072 to Holsworthy to join the A388. When it reaches the A386, turn right to Great Torrington and join the B3227. Take this all the way to South Moulton, then turn left on the B3226 that becomes the fabulously twisty A399 when it crosses the A361.
