This week in MCN... in 1986
It might be 30 years ago, but we all remember the events of 1986. Not least a brave biker chasing five armed robbers
As 1986 drew to a close there had been a lot to reflect on. It was the year of the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster, e-mail had been invented and the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up.
In the biking world American Eddie Lawson had won the 500 world title while Rob Mcelnea battled to fifth in the final standings.
There was an ongoing row about tobacco sponsorship in racing and poodle-haired Europe had stormed to the top of the charts with The Finalcount-down. It was a time of the power ballad with Bon Jovi and other died-blonde rockers pretending to play guitars!
Honda rider Scot Hatfield meanwhile hit the headlines for his daring chase of a gang of armed robbers. Despite being shot at he refused to give up and kept going until the gang dumped their getaway car and made a run for it – when they were then rounded up. Hatfield said: “They sent me flying. The Honda was a bit bent but I jumped back on and chased after them again.”
