Pic of the week
There’s tough, then there’s the Dakar
January 2, 2017 will see the 39th running of the legendary Dakar rally get underway as 146 insanely committed riders head into the great unknown. Starting in Asuncion, Paraguay, the race will then head into Bolivia and Argentina.
While the Dakar has always been the ultimate test of man and machine, there’s an added dimension of mental challenge this year, as the riders are set to battle altitude as well – spending a week at 36004000 metres above sea level, where the air is thin, and the already exhausting race will demand every ounce of resolve.
The landscape-defining dunes will be a big feature of the race, too – with seven of the 12 stages being run on sand.
For those that finish, it will have been 14 days and 5500 miles of unrelenting agony. Q SEE MORE, P66
