Get prepared

Don’t just chuck it all in the machine. Remove all the armour from your kit, making a note of which protectors go where. Also unzip any internal linings, and check the pockets for stray earplugs etc.

Give it a scrub

Loosen any heavy dirt deposits or squashed flies by gently rubbing the exterior fabric with a damp microfibre cloth soaked in a little detergent. This will guarantee a better end result.

Go non-bio

You can buy specific detergents for textile kit, like this one from Sdoc (£10.45), but you can also use gentle, non-bio powder. Hand washing is safest, but you can machine wash on a gentle programme.

Dry it and proof it

Allow to air dry naturally, refit armour and linings, then reinvigorate your kit’s external water resistant properties by spraying on a product like the Sdoc100 Reproofing Spray (£11.99).
