‘Electric bike has left my boy buzzing’
2017 OSET 12.5V Racing £1075
Tester Adam Child/ Bodhi Child Time tested Ten weeks
What’s good? The Oset 12.5V Racing is an electric trials machine designed for kids from 2-5 years old – and it’s the perfect starter bike. My boy loves it, and has taken to it with ease after a year on a balance bike. There’s a conventional throttle, and a simple front and rear brake just like a normal bike. There are no gears – it’s twist and go. It’s also easy to restrict the power and throttle response. I started my lad on the lowest throttle setting, and 20% power (which is about walking pace). He is now up to 40% power – equivalent to a light jog.
This version features disc brakes front and rear, alloy wheels, hubs, bars and pegs, plus high-grade adjustable suspension. The quality is really impressive. We spent time making sure Bodhi was happy with everything, adjusting the levers to fit his tiny hands, and then he was away. He is two-and-a-half but looks comfortable on the Oset and can easily touch the floor. The battery has never run out on us (Oset claim it lasts 2-3 hours on 50% power). It took me a while to convince myself to part with a
grand for one, but I went for it and I’m glad I did.
What’s not? At just over £1000 it is an expensive ‘toy’ but you can see where the money has gone. It doesn’t feel cheap, as it has lightweight wheels and adjustable suspension. On the secondhand market it’s hard to find one for under £600, so you can always sell it on in a few years or trade up to one of the larger models. The batteries do make it heavier than I expected but my son can just about pick it up, plus there is a sidestand to make life easier for little ones.
