a Ducati 916 Brundle wishes for

1 Ducati 916

I’d have my original 916 which I bought new in the mid ‘90s, and never should have sold. It was beautiful. The first time I ever rode it was for a photoshoot and they wanted me to ride alongside a car. I didn’t know how to ride it – it was embarrassing really. Eventually I got bored with the pain in my wrists and having to wear a rucksack on my back and I bought a Triumph Sprint ST tourer.

2 Ariel Square Four

I always remember my dad having one and there would be room for one in my dream garage.

Despite my dad riding I was late getting into bikes. In 1994 we were making a video for Marlboro at Catalunya, which was going to be used for a simulator. We had a helicopter, two Yamaha YZR500 Grand Prix bikes and my F1 car – I was a works driver for Marlboro Mclaren at the time.

It took three days of filming. Randy Mamola was one of the riders and said: “Why don’t we swap?” We asked Mclaren and they said no, but Randy said I could still have a go on the Yamaha. I stepped into his leathers and boots and the next thing I’m going down the pit lane on this 500 – the first time I’d ridden a bike since my 50cc Garelli when I was 16. Luckily he told me to brake at 300 metres for the first corner because we brake at 80m in F1. For the first lap I couldn’t turn the bike and it took me so long to come back round the team thought I’d fallen off. I couldn’t get the bike to turn because I was clueless!

3 Brough Superior

I’d have one of those old Brough Superiors under the tree. Not really my gig but looks handy for the kids’ pensions.

4 Honda RC45

It’s a bike that’s synonymous with the TT. It’s the bravery of those guys that gets me. I know Mcguinness quite well and I don’t even talk to him when I go to the Isle of Man. He scares me – you are talking to someone who is about to go out and ride that course.

5 Ducati Superleggera

I love the carbon chassis and power, although the exhaust design looks dodgy. I need to go and learn how to ride bikes like these properly. I did a Ducati day at Silverstone and I realised how clueless I am. I started trying things, but I need to go and learn some basics.

That Square Four ought to be more suitable than Randy’s YZR
