It’s mad to think now, but back in 1977 Honda had been away from top-flight rac­ing since 1967 af­ter ma­jor rule changes to bring race bikes closer to road bikes left Ja­panese bike builders hav­ing to start from scratch. Honda walked away. But in 1977 the Big H an­nounced a bold plan to fight back. And so they did, in typ­i­cal Honda style re­veal­ing an oval-pi­s­toned four-stroke. The NR500 made its de­but in 1979 Bri­tish GP but Takazumi Katayama and Mick Grant failed to fin­ish.
