TALE OF FIVE TITLES
Byrne’s five championship trophies take pride of place in the living room of his home on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, alongside his five championship-winning lids. While he says he’s not too sentimental about the silverware, each title does mean something different.
“The first title was special. Paul signed me at the end of 2002 and 2003 was our first year working together. We had a great year, won a load of races in BSB the two WSB races at Brands. It was really nice to be able to say I was British Superbike Champion for the first time.”
“This one was nice as it came on the back of a few tough years. I really enjoyed riding for GSE and Airwaves and for me this one was important as it proved 2003 wasn’t a fluke as I’d come back and done it again.”
“Again, this was an important title for us. It was my first year back with Paul and Paul’s first back in BSB after time in World Superbikes. This was his first BSB title since the one I won for him back in 2003!”
“This title meant I was the first rider to win four British Superbike Championships! I really enjoyed racing against Kiyo. The races were so close and a lot of fun. It was a shame Kiyo missed the final round.”
“This year’s title was really special because it was something different. Ducati hadn’t won a title in so long, they hadn’t even won a race in six years and everybody thought we were going to struggle.”
