Britain’s biggest hope
British rider Sam Sunderland signed for the factory KTM team in 2015 after winning stages of the Dakar and world championship rally events. A Dakar win still eludes him.
“The Dakar’s a huge, huge challenge. The fact that it only happens once a year means you get one shot, which if you mess up then you’ve blown it, which I’ve done a few times. It’s a bug, like climbing Everest. You try to do it 10 times and you fail 10 times but you still want to scale it.
“Do I enjoy it? Hard to say. If you asked a marathon runner at 20 miles, ‘are you having a good time?’ what would they say? You race because you want to win, but at the time you are really suffering.”
