Dave Thorpe’s double delight
Forty years ago, Barry Sheene was dominating 500 GPS, but 30 years ago another Brit was claiming world titles. Dave Thorpe successfully defended his World 500 Motocross title and his MCN Man of the Year in 1986. It wasn’t until 1989 that Thorpe added to his world title tally, but after that a switch to Kawasaki saw further title bids falter. He retired in 1993 and embarked on a managerial career. In 1994 his team of Rob Herring, Paul Malin and Kurt Nicoll won the Motocross Des Nations, ending 13 years of American domination. And Thorpe won the Veteran World Cup in 2007.
