Motogp was entering the 800cc era and some guy called Stoner had just signed for Ducati
The year started with plenty of debate over Motogp which was undergoing a major change with bikes now limited to just 800cc – down from 990. Valentino Rossi may have ruled from 2001 to 2005 but Nicky Hayden caused a stir by claiming the title in 2006 after Rossi crashed in the last race of the season.
Casey Stoner, meanwhile, had just signed for Ducati but few expected him to mount a serious challenge for the title. Of course he walked it, leading to cracking confrontations with Rossi both on and off the track for years to come.
This was also the year James Toseland would take his second World Superbike title after an epic battle with Noriyuki Haga. The Brit pipped the popular Japanese rider to the title by only two points before jumping ship to Motogp.
