I meant to do that…

Rupert Paul’s article about how to brake hard reminded me of an incident when I was an instructor with the BMF Rider Training Scheme. A group of trainees were practising emergency stops and asked me to demonstrate. Stopping from 30mph was over in a fraction of a second, so we went off to a quiet area where I could demonstrate from a higher speed. On a suitable stretch I rode the bike up to 50mph and firmly applied the front brake. I stopped in a dead straight line but with the back wheel at least three feet off the ground and myself slid forward and sitting astride the tank with knees almost touching the handlebars! As I gently released the brake the bike settled down and stopped, to rounds of applause from the lads, who thought it was very well practised. Little did they know it was the one and only rolling stoppie I’ve ever performed. Mike Baker, Cornwall
