GRAND DESIGNS

World famous product designer launches his own motorcycle brand

Motorcycle News (UK) - - This Week - By Andy Calton

Sacha Lakic is a French architect and designer who loves bikes so much he has launched his own motorcycle company. For his Blacktrack brand, he’s created the BT-01S and BT-01R which are based on the Honda CX500 and he’s got some new bikes in the pipeline. He said: “I’ve always been fascinated by cars and motorcycles, by high speed. I love what it represents – it’s a symbol of modernity, technology and freedom. Motorcycles are definitely my favourite products to use and design.”

Lakic currently gets around on a Yamaha Tmax, a Harley Softail Breakout and a Voxan Black Magic, which he also designed. He may have made a name for himself by designing buildings and furniture, but it’s bikes that he finds the most challenging. He said: “Designing a chair, a lamp or even a house is a piece of cake for me. It is more my other designs, like furniture, that are inspired by the world of motorcycles. When I’m designing, regardless of the object, I try to bring the same strong emotional sensation of movement. I feel that a product that is in motion is alive, almost as if it has a soul. The idea of movement is always present in my work, and has become the signature of my designs.”

And while Lakic could have chosen a more dramatic bike to base his first offering on, he explains how the humble CX500 became his blank canvas. “I love the design of this engine – it is a work of art in itself and I have always considered the technology of this model very advanced for the 80s.

“It is nicely proportioned in terms of style and much more compact, elegant and lighter than a Guzzi engine. I have always been a little frustrated by the design of this model, and for me it was an opportunity to highlight the beauty of the engine, and to bring the style to the level of its technology.”

Lakic will build five R models (£50,000 each) and 20 of the standard bike (£30,000 each), although buyers can spec their machine how they want.
