A lot will be said about Guy Martin returning to the TT this year. And while the fast-talking, fast-thinking and fast-riding Martin may shudder at the thought of all the publicity his return to racing will garner, he’s made a decision that’s right for him. Of that you can be sure.
He has claimed previously that if he walks away from the TT, he will do so with nothing left to prove. And yet, he quite clearly feels he has unfinished business on the island.
He also stated (in MCN funnily enough) at the end of November that if he does return to the TT he’d be ‘ totally dedicated to it’ and ‘ in it to win it’.
His lack of pre-tt bike time and focus has been questioned in the past, but Honda team boss Neil Tuxworth will have agreed a testing programme and will have laid down the law about any more distracting TV work.
Guy Martin has brought a lot to bike racing. His quick wit, unpredictable nature and unwillingness to toe the line have endeared to him to people well beyond motorcycling. And that can only be a good thing.
A focused, bike-fit Guy with the might of Honda and a new Fireblade behind him, will be a force to be reckoned with. Returning to the TT is a brave decision. But brave is one thing Guy Martin has always been. ANDY CALTON
