‘You sure you’re Barry?’

Motorcycle News (UK) - - This Week -

In 1974, aged 17, I was driving from Horncastle to Cadwell at 7.30am to a race meeting. I couldn’t help but notice a gold Rolls-royce following me. As I approached the gate the Roller pulled up at the side of me. The occupant turned out to be Barry who opened his window and enquired if I and my two mates had tickets, which we hadn’t. I was given two paddock passes and the entry ticket for RIDER No 7! The bloke at the gate let us in but did remark: “Are you sure you’re Barry Sheene?” Later that day, Barry spotted me drooling over his bikes and said “I see you got in alright then”. That day will be with me forever. David Bates, email
