Ride the ‘Top Gear’ road

Motorcycle News (UK) - - This Week -

Ever watched Top Gear and thought ‘that looks a fantastic road, I’d love to ride that’? Well now you can. Top Gear (the previous incarnation with the three old men) frequently filmed on the A4069, Wales’ best road and worst-kept secret.

The A4069 isn’t a road to go flat-out on, it’s one to be enjoyed at a gentle pace as it reveals some of the most spectacular views Wales has to offer over the Black Mountains.

Starting at Llandovery, which is easy to locate as it is at the junction of the A40 and A483, drop off the main road and enjoy the start of the A4069 as it runs alongside the far busier A40 before turning at Llangadog. Picking up the A4069 again, this is where the fun really starts and once you cross the cattle grid that signifies the sheep are on the roam, the ride only gets better and better. A few miles more and you will encounter quite a treacherous uphill hairpin whose surface is chewed up by frost, so take care here before powering up the hill to be rewarded with some spectacular views.

The next few miles are far more open before a lovely section of bends rounds off the route as you drop into Brynamman, from where you can loop back to Llandovery by taking the A4067 via Ystradgynlais.
