If pay­ing £16k is a bit steep, Suzuki will re­lease the ba­sic GSX-R1000 in March, two months be­fore the R ar­rives. Cost­ing £13,249 it will be the cheap­est of all the su­per­bikes (see over the page) and it’s not that dif­fer­ent to the R.

You get Showa BPF forks and a stan­dard shock in­stead of the ‘Bal­ance-free’ units and you forgo a shifter/blip­per. It doesn’t have the R’s light­weight top yoke, LED po­si­tion lights and black-faced LCD dash. That aside you get the same engine, chas­sis and the full suite of elec­tronic rider modes and aids, ex­cept for cor­ner­ing ABS. And a £3k sav­ing...
