Shoei X-spirit III £699.99 (plain colours £599.99)

Tested by Emma Franklin Time tested 11 months/4000 miles What’s good This is the third incarnation of the X-spirit and it’s the lightest and most technologically advanced yet. In fact, wearing it is almost like not wearing a helmet at all. It’s so light and unobtrusive that you forget you’ve got it on. New for this year is a redesigned multicomposite shell that boasts a reduction in turbulence and increased ventilation as well as proven Sharp 5-star safety. The X-spirit III also has a new visor with a double-locking mechanism clip which reduces the chance of the visor opening unexpectedly – something I’d never experienced when wearing Shoeis. The removable/washable interior has been upgraded for extra comfort and can be tilted by four degrees within the shell to maximise vision when tucked in a racing crouch. Visibility is excellent, as is stability at speed. For me, the X-spirit III is as good as it gets. What’s not I can’t get on with the new locking visor mechanism; I find unlocking it hard, leading to me getting slightly panicky when I find I can’t open the visor. Then there’s the price – it is a beautifully high-tech and wellmade lid, and is superior over the X-spirit II, but it currently costs £300 more than the outgoing lid, which is a lot of money.
