Turning a revolutionary road bike into superbike challenger

Building a race bike is never a small task, especially when you’re starting off with a brand new machine like Suzuki’s GSX-R1000. MCN sat down with Bennetts Suzuki boss Steve Hicken to find out what they’ve been doing to turn it into a potential BSB title challenger.

No. 1 on the list

“We took delivery of our first bike in November, Suzuki had only just revealed the GSX-R in Milan so we were one of the first teams in the world to take delivery of the preproduction model.”

Believe the hype

“The first thing we did was dyno it in stock trim as we wanted to make sure that the power Suzuki were claiming was there, and it is, which was a relief as we’ve all heard the hype before but the figures back it up with this bike.”

Electronics are the priority

“Our main priority was getting a wiring loom made for the MOTEC electronics. At the same time we set about designing the triple clamps, getting some swingarms modified and other bits like that.”

500 dyno runs and counting

“When the loom was made we set about the superbike development. The bike went straight to MOTEC so they could set up the firmware - we couldn’t even start the thing until this was completed! Now we’re 500 dyno runs later after working on the new blipper, throttle connections, torque mapping – you name it we’ve done it.”

Unprecedented factory support

“We’ve been involved with a couple of manufacturers in the past but we’ve never had support like this. I don’t think there’s another team in BSB with the same level of factory support we have.”

Swingarm option

“We’ve got two swingarm options at the moment. It’s really nice to have the full factory option from Yoshimura, but in the past we’ve proven that a Harris modified standard arm can work really well. We’ll work hard in testing to get the maximum out of the Harris arm before seeing if we can better that with the Yoshimura option.”

Delivery from Japan

“Yoshimura have also sent us a carbon-fibre sub-frame, seat unit and custom made tank. It’s an amazing piece of kit, we just need to assess what will work well for us and what our riders are happiest with.”

Big power, massive torque

“The engine is producing big power, massive torque and what shocked us is just how linear it is, it’s practically a straight line! I think the riders will get a false sense that it almost feels slow but it’s definitely not. That’s all down to the variable valve timing, which should be great for tyre wear so hopefully we can get the softer Pirelli SC0 tyre option to work at most of the BSB circuits.”
