New & used trailies from £2k
We’re in the tail end of winter. It’s cold and grey out there, and our sweet black tarmac is lost under a thick blanket of salty grime. Why on earth would we take our pride and joy out in those kinds of conditions?
Standard protocol dictates we give our bikes a once-over, wrap them up safely under a cover and tuck them in for a spot of hibernation until we’re once more blessed with dry roads and beautiful sunshine. But while most motorcycles wouldn’t say no to a toasty garage, there is, however, one breed which laughs at the prospect – the single-cylinder trailie, motorcycling’s toughest collection of bikes.
Lightweight, versatile and endowed with almost unfathomable levels of durability, these thumpers are capable of tackling anything you throw at them – from green lane escapades and enduros to round-the-world epic adventures. They may well all be trail bikes at heart but they each have their own advantages and excel in different situations.
So, under a cloak of cloud and mist, we nabbed a solid cross section of singles to represent the trailie class. Ranging from 250 to 650cc in c apacity, these singles will all make you smile more than a six-year-old on his birth- day. Whether you’re powering through the mud on the Yamaha Serow XT250, entering an enduro on the Suzuki DR350, riding to Morocco for a splash of sun on the CCM GP450 Adventure or touring on the BMW F650 Dakar – they’ll all keep you happy, and, just as importantly, on the road (or indeed offroad) through winter as your mates sit out the commute in their stuffy cars. The only question is; which is the best used proposition, and which capacity suits your needs the best?
To find out, we borrow a handful of trailies to find out which one you should go for to keep the wheels rolling until springtime.
