Go the extra mile
Meet the big-mileage club
We’re loosely following the route of the Tour of Cambridgeshire cycle race, starting from the East of England Showground, home of the MCN Festival of Motorcycling (www. mcnfestival.com).
You soon leave the city behind you, swinging onto Bullock Road, an old drovers road. Your next highlight is the run to Great Gidding and Winwick. This is a lovely stretch and is a combination of great bends and undulations.
Exercise caution when crossing over the railway line just after Abbots Ripton, the sharp 90-degree bend has caught out the odd motorcyclist.
Towards Ramsey St Mary’s the landscape changes and you are in the fens, with big skies and views that go on for miles. At Pondersbridge head left onto the B1095, take the minor but very sharp left turn into Wrights Drove and almost immediately the sharp right onto the aptly named Straight Drove. Before long you’ll be on the route of the old A1. It becomes almost single-track road and takes you through Haddon and back to Bullock Road.
