New breed of superbikes are super-bonkers!

Motorcycle News (UK) - - This Week - ANDY CALTON

The latest breed of 1000cc sportsbikes are too powerful, too expensive and too reliant on electronics. And we love them.

Even if we don’t actually want to buy one – although judging by this week’s sportsbike shootout (see page 36) many will – they are still wondrous things .

Things to be admired, drooled over and talked about. Things to tackle British Superbikes and the TT and things to be muscled around at the front of the fast group at a trackday.

And now that the top speed race has been run (with manufacturers agreeing to a 186mph voluntary limit as far back as 2001), the men in white coats have turned their attention to other things. Like making brilliant suspension, like making the brakes work better, like creating an electronic brain to keep all of this stuff working in harmony. Which all helps the bike go faster without firing its rider into the nearest hedge/ ditch/house.

And the latest superbike gizmo of today is the must-have safety accessory of tomorrow. Of course you don’t need 195bhp, but you might need ABS the next time a car pulls out in front of you. And you might be glad of semi-active suspension the next time you hit a horrible pothole on your way to see granny. So, 1000cc sportsbikes – we love em.
