back in full attack mode

Motorcycle News (UK) - - Sport -

In his previous incarnation as a WSB rider, Marco Melandri was serial race winner with a reputation for being as tough as they come in his approach to doing battle.

After a two-year gap he is still re-learning the black arts of full attack race mode at this level and until now his return he has been effective, but almost respectful.

But for the first time in Spain we saw glimmers of the old Marco, with tough passes on the Yamaha riders and also Tom Sykes resulting in a double podium for the 34-yearold Italian.

You can see Melandri’s confidence returning with every fight. Now he just needs to find that final bit of magic to be able to take the battle to Rea and Davies over a full race distance.

He said: “We need to work a bit more to try to close the gap to fight for a win. It is not a big gap but we have to close it. I think our bike is growing up and working well now, but we need to improve the rideability a little bit.”

He is now only 10 points behind Sykes and just 14 behind secondplaced Chaz Davies.
