‘ This win is a warning shot to his rivals’

Winning Dakar and cementing his place in the history books is one thing, but the fact that Sunderland has come out and won the next big race of 2017 is a big warning shot to his rivals.

While there is no disputing his pace, fitness or commitment to racing, Sunderland has endured some big injuries in his career, which have ultimately affected his results.

As a rider he always tried to make up the difference by pushing harder and, having ridden with him, trust me when I say he is a rider with unbelievable natural speed with the balls to twist the throttle!

However his light bulb moment to change his tactics came when he was lying in a ditch with a broken Femur after crashing out of the Morocco rally at the end of 2015. The career-threatening injury saw him revise his strategy – letting his pace do the talking when it suits and staying calm and getting to the finish when it doesn’t.
