The long-awaited and hot­ly­de­bated change to 990cc four-stroke GP bikes fi­nally came to fruition as 21 bikes blasted away from the lights at Suzuka as the 2002 sea­son got un­der way. There were still a dozen 500cc twostrokes on the grid, but it was the four-strokes that stole the head­lines, fill­ing the top four spots. With Rossi in his pomp there was no stop­ping him tak­ing a ververyy wet win, but Akira Ryo was the sur­prise pack­age, fin­ish­ing sec­ond as a wild-card on the new fourstroke GSV-R.
