Only way is Wessex
Have a brilliant blast along this Southern stunner
Taking the B3400 west from Basingstoke offers relief from this roundabout-strewn town, and while it’s littered with speed limits it’s a lovely road for a ride.
Continuing into Whitchurch you need to be careful to follow the signs for Andover to make sure you don’t end up on the A34, which is an easy mistake to make. Once out of Whitchurch and back on the open roads it’s a mere eight miles before you hit Andover and need to look for the A343, skirting to the north of the town before heading towards Newbury.
The A343 is a scenic, tree-lined road with undulations and gentle bends that are enjoyable to ride. The magnificent Highclere Castle appears through the trees on this stretch and you should recognise it if you’ve been forced to watch ITV’S period drama Downton Abbey (and paid attention!). Newbury can be a bit of a bottleneck so pick your time wisely to avoid getting stuck, but it’s also the ideal place for a quick break before finishing the 54-mile loop off by taking the A339 south-east back to the starting point in Basingstoke.
