Q Why is my R1 making black smoke signals?

Motorcycle News (UK) - - Garage -

I have a fuelling problem with my 2012 Yamaha R1. It will be running fine on a small throttle opening and then randomly start hesitating/running rough until I open the throttle further. When it hesitates the trip-computer shows the fuel consumption plummeting from 4050mpg to 15-20mpg, and as I open it up mates behind see a black cloud from the Akrapovic exhaust and smell petrol.

I’ve had the bike into a Yamaha dealer three times to have an 8000-mile service, a new battery, a Power Commander and replacement throttle bodies. I think the previous owner had an ECU flash. I have just about run out of patience and money to cure the problem. David Raymond, email

A Answered by Charles Marvell, Flitwick Motorcycles You need to bite the bullet and get the bike on to a good dyno with someone who knows what they are doing. This will pinpoint what is happening to the fuelling.

Power Commanders will not cure a serious underlying problem, they are there to marry the fuelling to a new set-up (eg an aftermarket pipe) and take out the dips put in to achieve the necessary Euro emissions spec.

If all else fails, then going back to standard is really the only way to go, at least it will give you known baselines from where to proceed. Unfortunately, this is an expensive business with your Yamaha, needing a complete ECU and ignition switch kit.

It’s a stark warning regarding the buying of non-standard machines; you have to wonder why the previous owner sold it?
