MT promises

Maturing PCP deals mean there are great used bike bargains to be had

EX-PCP MT-09S are hitting dealers and they’re cheap

Buyers went mad for Yamaha’s all-new MT-09 when it was released back in 2013. Not only was the naked 847cc triple brilliant fun but at just £6799 it represented brilliant value. Selling by the boatload, it was also one of the first bikes to be readily purchased on PCP which means now, three years down the line, dealers are seeing those original bikes filter on to the used market.

And if we thought the new bike was good value, the MT-09 is even better as a used buy. Saul Towers, Sales Manager of Flitwick Yamaha, told MCN: “If ever there was a bargain bike of the moment, then 2014 MT-09 is most definitely it.

“We’ve got three 2014 models in at the moment and they’re all sub-£5000 – which, in terms of bang for your buck, is really hard to beat. It was cheap when it was new, which is what everyone picked up on, but the MT-09 was also a really good bike in its own right, and now as a used buy it’s doubly so.”

Concerns that the original machine’s bargain price might’ve compromised build quality also appear to be unfounded, as Saul reckons the used MTS he’s seen so far are standing the test of time.

“All the used bikes we’re seeing are in very good condition – they’re holding up really well – and that’s not what you’d expect for such a bargain bike. The exhaust is so good it’s like it’s been made using witchcraft – it doesn’t discolour like so many other underslung systems can, that’s because Yamaha treated it with a nanofilm coating which seems to work well.”

Although there are a fair few MT-09S coming through into the used market, dealers like Flitwick aren’t seeing as many as they’d hoped. “Surprisingly, there’s not as many as you’d expect coming directly back into dealers because for some reason the finance company has been putting the bikes that PCP buyers have walked away from directly into auction,” says Towers.

A quick browse at the bikes sold at BCA Peterborough’s February auction sees a few MT-09S sold, with one 18,000-mile example going for as little as £3200. So now’s the time to treat yourself to a used Yamaha triple.
