12 brilliant helmets for under £150
There was a time, not so long ago, when a low-price lid wasn’t a particularly nice place to put your head. Uncomfortable, noisy and lacking in spec, they were no match for higher priced helmets. Fortunately, things in 2017 are much better. These days, riders looking to spend sensible money on a lid don’t have to feel like they’re slumming it, because today’s entry-level lids now include premium features like removable linings, a choice of shell sizes, advanced ventilation systems, drop-down sun shields, Pinlock-ready visors and even race-replica paint schemes. Here are 12 of this year’s best value head protectors.
LS2 FF320 Stream Lunar £99
Huge in Spain, LS2 helmets are now making a massive impression on the UK market with an entire range of high-quality well-priced lids. The Stream is one up from the firm’s entry-level model and is beautifully made with nice finishing touches like the rubber-coated neck roll at the rear. The Stream also packs the spec, too, with removable hypoallergenic lining, Pinlock Max Vision visor (not included), dropdown sunvisor, and micrometric buckle. Available in sizes XXS-XXL in one shell size. White, black, matt black, black/white, and five different colour schemes.
Caberg Stunt Blizzard £149.99
Super-aggressive looks make the Stunt ideal for urban riders and fans of the streetfighter style. Beautifully made with nice finishing touches like a rubber neck roll at the rear for increased comfort, the mid-priced Caberg also packs features such as a plush removable lining, an anti-scratch drop-down sunvisor, an external visor that’s ready to take a Pinlock anti-fog insert, as well as a removable chin curtain to keep out draughts. The polycarbonate shell is available in two sizes across the S-XXL range. Plain black or white cost just £129.99.
AGV K3 Guy Martin replica £149.99
The AGV K3 is brilliant value and a huge seller for the Italian brand. It is beautifully made and lightweight with an aggressive, sporty shell shape and plush, removable Dri-lex lining, but this version is an extremely faithful replica of the helmet that Guy wore during his 2015 season.
The Guy Martin K3 retails at £149.99 but is on sale now at Mcnshop.com for just £119.99. And it has a 4-star SHARP rating too. The only downside of this lid is that the visor’s not Pinlock ready, but AGV claim that it has been treated with an anti-mist coating, and if you want a Pinlock-ready visor you can buy them – along with tinted and iridium coloured ones – for about £40.
HJC CS-15 £89.99
Korean brand HJC has been growing in recent years, thanks to its reputation for creating brilliantly performing lids for not a lot of cash. And this is their latest entry-level offering, the £89.99 CS-15. It uses a polycarbonate shell that’s available in two sizes – a smaller shell for sizes extra small to medium, and a larger shell for sizes L-XXL. There are easy-to-operate slide vents at the brow and chin, and a built-in breath guard. The CS-15 benefits from a removable, washable internal lining, a decent-quality Pinlock-ready visor, and an easy-to-use micrometric chin buckle. Available in a choice of eight graphic designs for £89.99, or plain black and white for £79.99.
