TOM SYKES SLIPS UP
Tom Sykes’ biggest problem on his factory Kawasaki was not bike set-up or tyre choice, but, as he joked after race two, Chaz Davies.
In race one it was a lack of grip he did not expect after a strong practice and qualifying. Fourth was clearly a disappointment, but it gave him a pole position start in race two under the latest reverse grid rules.
Some chassis changes led to understeer in some sections in race two as he tried to keep Davies and then Jonathan Rea behind him. The result of the understeer was seen when he was consistently and dramatically smoking his rear tyre over the Piratella crest.
He took third place, and did not lose out too much to Rea, finishing within a second of his team-mate at the flag. “I was suffering a little bit with turning the bike and that meant I wasn’t able to use the best of the rear tyre – that is why you saw a lot of smoke!”
“My lap times were not too bad but Chaz had another step today. But ultimately, at this track, we did not have the package.”
