Q Why has my CB1300’S gearbox got rough?

Motorcycle News (UK) - - Garagae -

I have got a 2003 Honda CB1300 with approximately 12,000 miles on the clock. I’ve just had my first rideout this year on it and I’m struggling to get it to select third, fourth, fifth and sixth, although it’s fine on the downshift in these gears. Until now the gearbox has been extremely smooth. Nigel Rollin, email

A Answered by Chris Dabbs, MCN That’s a low-mileage for its age and could have something to do with it as all those extended idle periods don’t do the mechanicals any favours. Moisture creeps into pivots and bearings and corrosion builds up on exposed metal. The fact that it’s not good on upchanges and better on downshifts makes me think it could just be the gearchange mechanism, as it’s generally easier to move the lever down than up. I’d inspect and lubricate that, making sure it’s just right for your booted foot position, change the engine oil and take it out for a good, long ride. You could see if running it in lower gears at highish revs helps…
