There are two types of supermoto: converted crossers and those designed from the outset as road bikes. The SWM SM650R is the former. Using a Rotax-based 600cc single (designed by Husqvarna), the SM is a pure supermoto so, unless you are often in a silly mood, you probably shouldn’t apply.

The big single punches out 53bhp with pure off-road aggression, and if you want to take it easy the suspension delivers a harsh ride – while the seat is akin to torture. However, like any full-on supermoto, when the roads dry out and you start to push on, that firm Marzocchi fork and Sachs shock begin to make a lot of sense; the single radial Brembo caliper bites the big 320mm disc with ferocity and feeding the engine more gears results in an even wider grin. It’s not at all sensible, but it is bloody good fun and that’s why some love this style of bike – and others loathe them.
