Starting at number one
If there’s one person who’s going to feel tense on the grid it has to be the man who’ll be starting number one on the grid – Norton’s Dave Johnson.
“I started at number one at the Classic TT a few years back and it was okay. The biggest difference is all the media coverage you get and the crowd of people around you on the grid,” Johnson tells us.
“That’s a bit nerve-racking at the start of the race, but once that’s over it’s visor down and away you go. To be honest, it’s worse for me watching other people go first! You watch them go down and think ‘s**t, it’s my turn now’ so maybe it’ll be better this time.
“I’m usually pretty blank really, while I’m rolling to the line I’ll often look to see if there’s anyone I know in the crowd and nod my head to them. Then you’re by yourself and it is pretty scary and you do s**t yourself a bit. But once the guy is there and his hand is on your shoulder everything just goes out of your head and you’re focusing on what you have to do.”
