‘I’m in my own little world’
Of course, it’s not the same for everyone. Some riders don’t even notice the tension. That can be said for Peter Hickman, the TT’S fastest ever newcomer tipped as the next big thing in road racing.
“I’m just preparing myself, getting ready,” he explains. “I’m not s***ting myself but you do know that everything has been building up to that moment and I guess there’s the hope that everything is going to be alright.
“There’s always a good atmosphere on the grid, but I can’t really tell whether it’s tense. I’m certainly not tense, but that’s just me! I’m a bit like that. I’m there to do a job, I’m doing what I want so I don’t really get nervous or tense or anything like that. Everyone else does. My missus gets nervous, but it doesn’t affect me at all.
“Having people around me on the grid doesn’t bother me. The ten seconds go really quickly, it seems to take ages to get to that point, the run up where you’re waiting for everyone else to go – that seems to take forever – but once the guy in front goes and you roll to the line, that time goes really fast.”
