The state-of-the-art Mugen boasts a carbon fibre frame, swingarm and exquisite running gear, but it’s the electric motor that’s astounding – producing 148bhp @ 8000rpm and 162ftlb of torque from 1rpm to 8000rpm. Because of this, there are no gears – just a single-speed transmission with a chain drive.
The motor is mounted under the swingarm pivot – most of the volume of the bike is taken up with the lithium-ion battery pack to power the bike flat-out over the 37.73-mile course. Mcguinness holds the lap record at 119.279mph.
