LOWES SCORES FIRST APRILIA POINTS
Sam Lowes has broken his Motogp duck by taking his first points in the top class after a breakthrough weekend that saw him take a major step forwards on-board his Aprilia RS-GP.
Finishing the race in 14th but only seven seconds off the top 10 (after missing out on progressing to Q2 on Saturday by only 0.2 seconds), the former World Supersport champion came away pleased with his results, especially after so little dry track time as rain struck the Le Mans circuit.
“It’s not amazing, but it was all right! And it was close to being amazing. I did a slow last lap, when Bradley ran off and came back on we hit each other,
and I lost another two seconds, so really I was only three or four seconds off the top 10.
“We had a little bit of a different strategy for the engine braking, and that was a lot different for me – a lot better. My biggest problem is stopping the bike - it has been since I got on it and it’s where I lose all my time. And after this weekend I’d say I halved the gap; it’s still not perfect, but it’s only half as bad as it was before.”
There’s even more good news on the horizon for Lowes in the coming weeks, with a test at Barcelona next week and a slew of upgrades expected in time for the next race in Mugello.
“We’ve got a lot of parts to test, so fair play to the team because we’re really trying a lot of things. I’ll have an engine upgrade for Mugello; when you hear that, especially going to Mugello, it’s music to your ears – it’s the best news in the world!”
