This month saw a seis­mic shift in bike rac­ing with the death of Robert Dunlop and with it, the emer­gence of his son Michael. Robert’s tragic death at the NW200, com­bined with Michael’s amaz­ing ride two days after his fa­ther’s death, pro­pelled him into the lime­light. This mo­ment was cap­tured in the 2014 film Road, but at the time none of us knew that this was the start of a new Dunlop dy­nasty. Since that mo­ment, Michael has emerged as the hard­est, fastest road racer of his gen­er­a­tion.

Great Bri­tain was go­ing through a funny old time in 2008. Gor­don Brown was Prime Min­is­ter, hav­ing taken over from Tony Blair and was try­ing to guide the UK through one of the tough­est fi­nan­cial crises in a long time. Banks and build­ing so­ci­eties were fold­ing, house prices fall­ing and peo­ple los­ing their jobs. Luck­ily, they were still buy­ing, sell­ing and rid­ing mo­tor­cy­cles, though.
