The Merzouga has two classes for bikes: Rally and Enduro. The Rally bikes are exactly like those you see at Dakar but the Enduro class is designed to make the race accessible. The Enduro machines must be regular production bikes and keep as close as possible to the original design, so no changing of the mudguards, seat, frame, swingarm or engine. The only changes that are allowed include a plastic fuel tank, exhaust, footrests and a road book holder. You could buy a bike that’s a few years old and get it ready to rally for £6000, which is a far cry from the £30,000 for a full rally bike.
