Bir­chall broth­ers set new record

Mans­field broth­ers Ben and Tom Bir­chall be­came the first side­car team to break the 117mph bar­rier as they set a new lap record for the three­wheel­ers on their way to vic­tory in the open­ing Side­car TT.

They set the new out­right lap record of 117.119mph on their IEG Rac­ing Honda on the sec­ond lap of the race to take their fifth Side­car TT vic­tory. They also set the fastest speed ever recorded by a side­car at 148.1mph on the Sulby Straight.

“The bike’s good, the team is good, it’s all there,” Ben smiled as they cel­e­brated their land­mark vic­tory.

John Holden and Lee Cain were sec­ond on the Sil­i­cone En­gi­neer­ing Honda, 25.6 sec­onds be­hind with lo­cal favourites Dave Molyneux and Dan Sayle third, 18 sec­onds be­hind.
