Marc Marquez’s hopes of taking points off title rival Maverick Viñales were brought to an abrupt halt at Mugello, after suffering throughout the race weekend with tyre issues he had to settle for sixth place.

Forced by construction of the tyres that Michelin brought to the race to take an unusual decision and run the medium front instead of his usual hard option, Marquez adopted the cautious style that took him to the 2016 title and settled for safe points.

He said: “Of course it’s always important to try to win when you can. But at Mugello I tried to and couldn’t, even though I started quite well and did my best to push in the first few laps. I tried to be competitive, but I could see that I was taking a lot of risk in the corners.

“Then I started to struggle with the front tyre, because I went with the medium. It was asymmetric and the right side was harder and it was the only option that I had because with the hard option I could only do 12 laps until the tyre was destroyed. Even Dani was struggling.”

Unable to defend a top five position from the late-charging Alvaro Bautista Marquez scored 10 points compared to Viñales’ 20 and faces a tough challenge this weekend with hot and greasy conditions expected at his home race.
