Th­ese new dual-sport tyres from Ital­ian man­u­fac­turer Pirelli mix a rally-style tread pat­tern with claims of gen­uine on-road all-weather grip and feed­back. Fit­ted as OE to Du­cati’s 2017 Scram­bler Desert Sled, the new Scor­pion Rally uses a street bike pro­file and in­ter­nal struc­ture to guar­an­tee on-road han­dling and sta­bil­ity, but mixes it with a knob­blystyle tread to give off-road grip too. The Scor­pion’s rub­ber com­pound is high in sil­ica to boost both wet weather grip and mileage.

What are they like?

Be­ing hot-out-of-the-moulds this spring, we’re still wait­ing to do a ful­lon test of the STR. But MCN’S Chief Road Tester Michael Neeves got a brief ex­pe­ri­ence of their on-road and off-road cre­den­tials dur­ing a test of the Du­cati Desert Sled ear­lier this year, he said: “We tested Pirelli’s new dual-pur­pose tyres, fit­ted to a Scram­bler Desert Sled, on dusty scrub­land and roads near Du­cati’s fac­tory in Bologna. Off-road there’s no short­age of rear trac­tion, even on the loos­est sur­faces and the front serves-up lots of re­as­sur­ing grip and poise. Dual pur­pose rub­ber will al­ways be a com­pro­mise on the road, but the new Pirellis han­dle well on tar­mac, warm-up fast and of­fer lots of grip. Tread blocks are chunky, but firm, so there’s no prob­lem with straight line, or cor­ner­ing sta­bil­ity.”
