‘We nearly made the impossible possible’
It looked as though it would be a dream start for Michael Dunlop and the 2017 Suzuki GSX-R as he bolted off the line in Sunday’s opening race. While James Hillier took an early lead, Dunlop was in front by the end of the first lap with a stunning average speed of 131.135mph from a standing start – a remarkable feat given it’s a brand new bike and had completed just a handful of practice laps due to the bad weather.
While the 28-year-old was under- standably miffed on Sunday, he soon started to look at the positives. “It was nearly the impossible being possible yesterday,” he said. “People thought we were stupid coming with a brand new bike. We were going alright, I was having a bit of a push and she just stopped. These things happen.” While the Suzuki team wouldn’t comment on what went wrong with the bike, MCN understands it was an engine component failure.
