1987: Spencer bins it
‘Visors that cut light reception by more than 50% were due to be banned – but sunglasses were still allowed!’
The Tories were in again with a slightly reduced majority and there were a couple of Brits going strong in the 500GP championship. Ron Haslam finished fourth in the title chase behind Wayne Gardner, Randy Mamola and Eddie Lawson. And Niall Mackenzie wasn’t far behind him (fifth, in fact).
The Brits were going great guns in the off-road world, too, with Kurt Nicoll taking second place in the Italian 500 motocross GP. It moved Nicoll to fourth in the title chase. He would go on to finish runner-up behind Belgian legend Georges Jobe. Nicoll never won a 500 motocross world title, but took the second spot in the series an agonising four times.
