Cool customs

Bavarian cruiser revealed

Motorcycle News (UK) - - This Week - By Gary Pinchin

There’s a vintage feel to this beemer built by Pete Hodson at Side Rock Cycles, thanks not only to the full mudguards, single seat and laiddown shocks, but also the subdued blue and grey livery.

“The customer wanted a military grey theme for this bike but it’s a couple of steps lighter than the kind of livery that would be used on military spec machines,” says Bournemouthbased Pete.

Pete made the handlebars using the H-D ‘beach bar’ style as a template. All the wires run through the bars to ensure the curvaceous lines are uninterrupted. In fact all the wiring is concealed on this bike, the main lines running through the frame tubes. Bob at Woolbridge Motorcycles helped with the wiring. Pete’s opted for his favoured Motogadget M-unit and corresponding M buttons on the bars. Ignition is Boyer Bransden with a dual coil pack.

The engine has been fully rebuilt with new valves, guides, rings and refurbished carbs. The engine has also been powder-coated satin black with the top cover drilled and grilled. Pete fitted a lightweight starter motor that’s also better geared for ease of stating than the original BMW unit.

A refurbed Ural headlight, fitted with a halogen H4 bulb, has a new Koso speedo inset but Pete retained the original chunky Bakelite ignition switch. The bars and headlight were aqua blasted for a matt finish.

The original subframe has been dispensed with to be replaced by a small unit of Pete’s design, which acts as a base for the springs for the solo saddle. “I tried straight tubes but it didn’t look right so I opted for these neat curves,” he says. The seat was made by Glen Moger, hand-stitched in neutral-tanned leather and embossed with the SRC logo. Pete also made the new rear mudguard and stays. The canted forward shocks are YSS.

The fishtails exhausts are a collaboration between Pete and classic bike exhaust pipe specialists Armours. “They let me rummage through their stock until I found the pipes of the shape of was looking for then I had the fishtails grafted on,” says Pete.
